Geneva Motor Show: New Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe Debut

The E-Class Coupe is meant to replace the discontinued CLK, so Mercedes has a lot riding on the success of this model.

Here comes the E-Class Coupe as will be seen when its takes its first public bow at the Geneva motor show next month.

The petrol equivalent is the E 250 CGI BlueEFFICIENCY - a 4 cylinder direct injection petrol engine with 200 hp, 310 Nm of torque and 7.2 liters/100 km consumption.

With the new design, Mercedes says the E-Class will be the "world's most aerodynamically efficient series-production car." That's a bold claim to make but one can see in the newly acquired sleekness of the body that things have changed. This Coupe, in its slight form with no B-pillars and completely retractable side windows, creates a drag coefficient of just 0.24.

The technology goodies come aplenty, as is usual for Mercedes. There is the Adaptive Main Beam Assist for improved lighting with the headlamps tracking the road. And there is the automatic emergency braking system that helps prevent collisions.

But the real story here are the new engines which boast a great improvement in efficiency that reduce overall consumption by up to 17 percent over the previous engine range.

Two entry-level 4 cylinder engines have been upgraded for the range - one diesel, one petrol. The new E 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY diesel comes with fuel economy of just 5.3 liters/100 km while providing 200 hp and an impressive 500 Nm of torque.

The E-Class Coupe goes on sale in Europe at the beginning of May.
